Tell Glasgow City Council to end discrimination.

Glasgow City Council has refused again to enforce laws restricting the sale of meat from unstunned slaughter.

Schedule 12 of the Welfare of Animals (Slaughter or killing) Regulations (now Welfare of Animals at time of killing (Scotland) Regulation) stipulates that meat sourced from unstunned slaughter must not be provided or sold to non-Muslims/ Jews.

Years ago Scotland for Animals exposed the issue of these products entering the food chain illegally.

Via Freedom of information requests SfA discovered that while publicly denying that this situation exists privately the Scottish Government are not only aware that this meat is flooding stores but are working with local authorities to make sure laws to prevent this aren't enforced.

Scotland's largest council has claimed that it is impossible to control these products as it can't determine the source of the meat.

This isn't true.

In 2010 42 Halal butchers in Glasgow were raided by officials and had documents inspected to determine the source of products on sale. Glasgow City Council's Environmental services Director stated was "to ensure the protection of the ethnic community from the sale of illegal halal meat."

Exactly what officials are now refusing to do for Glaswegians in general.

Over the next month Glasgow will be buzzing with visitors from all over the world for the Commonwealth games. Outlets will be doing a roaring trade in unstunned meat.

Scotland for Animals lead the movement to have these products labelled by law. We want to see unstunned slaughter made illegal but until then at the very least regulations to prevent this type of slaughter becoming mainstream need to be applied.

Tell the council that everybody has the right to the same legal protections, including Muslims and Jews who are against the cruelty of unstunned slaughter.

Contact Chief Executive George Black and Council Leader Gordon Matheson and demand they enforce the Welfare of Animals at time of killing (Scotland) Regulation and the respect the rights of all Glasgow's citizens and visitors.

Sample message:

Dear Mr Black/ Mr Matheson,

I have been made aware that premises and suppliers in Glasgow are selling meat from animals slaughtered in UK abattoirs without the use of stunning.

The legal derogation which allows this type of slaughter only applies if the meat is restricted to the consumption of Muslims/ Jews.

As these products are in the general food chain this means that they have been sourced via illegal slaughter.

EU food safety legislation states that
"Food businesses must be able to identify the businesses from whom
they have obtained food, ingredients or food-producing animals and
the businesses they have supplied with products, and produce this
information on demand.". I trust that you will utilise this legislation in order to trace source and method of slaughter and ensure that these products are being suitably distributed.

I would be grateful if you could please keep me informed of what action you are taking with regards to this issue.

Yours sincerely,

Please share and forward us any replies.
